Coast Guards Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) During Shutdown

Update (Jan 26, 2019) – Now that President Trump has signed a bill to reopen the federal government until at least Feb. 15, the U.S. Coast Guard will receive its back pay and a regular paycheck next week. American Legion TFA applications will resume normal process.

Update (Jan 21, 2019) – The American Legion Department of California processed over 200 expedited Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) grant applications for our Coast Guard brothers and sister who have not been receiving their pay due to the government shutdown. That has been in about 1 week. There are still grants available, so read on.

Because of the current government shutdown, the families of many of our hard-working Coast Guardsmen are being put in a financial bind. The American Legion commitment to “Mutual Helpfulness” says we should help them, and we are with Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA).

To provide expedited assistance to our USCG, The American Legion National Headquarters has authorized the use of the abbreviated Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) application for use with active duty USCG only and only for the duration of the current government shutdown.

Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) for USCG

American Legion TFA grants help minor children in the home of active-duty servicemembers or current American Legion members with assistance for the costs of shelter, food, utilities, clothing, and health expenses during times of financial need. To provide expedited assistance to Coast Guardsmen during the government shutdown, American Legion National Headquarters has authorized the use of an abbreviated TFA application for use with active duty Coast Guard members only, and only for the duration of the current government shutdown.

The Coast Guard Mutual Assistance has these abbreviated applications, as well as American Legion State Departments and Petaluma Post 28
.
TFA provides one-time grants of up to $1,500 per eligible household. Once National Headquarters has received and approved a TFA application for a Coast Guard member, a check will be overnighted directly to the family in need.
